Casio Sk-1 Atari 2600 circuit bending project
I have modded a casio sk-1 keyboard with a circuit bent patch bay which is linked to the switches on the atari part of the controls. The two silver dials control a pitch bend and a poly voice filter bend. I also installed a 1/4" guitar jack out and a red reset button as sometimes the bends cause the sk-1 so freak-out and freeze requiring a deep reset.
The casio still works as usual, and I'm sure lots of people know just how great these little things can sound, but I can patch in bends with the patch bay and activate them with the switches. The bends offer me anything from light tremlo to strange ghost notes to full on distortion and random noise generators and stange musical passages...some of the bends are stable enough to use live (which I shall be exploiting soon) but as is the nature of circuit bending some of the really amazing sounds this thing comes out with are a little random and not quite live friendly.
The sampling section of the keyboard still works and the bends can be used to warp the samples as well which is awesome....

The 2600 Story: Part 1
CG.Com's Marty "Retro Rogue" Goldberg brings in the new year with The 2600 Story: Part 1. Celebrating its release during the holiday season 30 years ago, the three part series will take you behind the scenes of the development of the console and the people that started the modern video game industry.
At this time 30 years ago, Atari had just released its "Video Computer System" and sat at a major crossroads in both its place in the industry and its own internal development as a company. The video game market that Christmas was facing its first industry crash, with many of the dedicated PONG clone manufacturers dumping their product on the market to leave the business. Scared by the release of Faichild's microprocessor based console, the Faichild Video Entertainment System in 1976, they saw a pending technology shift that was to costly to enter in to. Getting out while they still could, the market was flooded with cheap PONG clones. Cheaper and portable LED based hand held games by companies like Mattel and Tomy were also beginning to dominate the already crowded consumer electronic entertainment market of the late 70's.
Atari had just been purchased by Warner Communications the year before, and was in the midst of being transformed from an engineering firm to a large electronic entertainment corporation. Here was Warner's new acquisition, now facing massive uncertainty and potential losses after investing a significant amount in the launch of their new console. Nobody at the time could have seen what was to be the future of the VCS or the company as a whole. Its ironic that a console that started off as a small side project with so many road blocks would go on to define the modern gaming industry, and play such an important part in history.
This article, as with my previous Atari related articles, is based on excerpts from a historical book on Atari being written by myself and my good friend (and über Atari historian) Curt Vendel. I present to you, the faithful ClassicGaming.Com readers, a look at the full story behind the development of the Atari 2600 (in three parts). Enjoy!
