Bard's Tale IV 2002 Petitions 531-598

I really liked the first 2 in more ways than would fit here, and I haven't gone through the third thouroughly. I think classic games such as this should be immortalized. Use the classic style graphic layout when you make the next one, ok? Some people think it's too old, but that's what makes it a classic!

i liked all the bards tales, i liked the way the mages can regenerate spell points with a mage staff and the bards have music as their magic and the monks are strong fighters without armor or weapons... a bard's tale 4 would be great i'd pay 50 bucks for it.. Great game...

I played the Bard's Tale trilogy on my Commodore 64 in the mid to late 80's (instead of concentrating on my high school classes!). I would absolutely love to see a new BT series begin!! Seeing BT IV in a smooth scrolling, true 3D world would give justice to the original game series, as long as the UI doesn't get cluttered up with the character screens (i.e. Ultima IX, Ultima Online, and the latest Might & Magics are too bogged down with inventory management).

Bard's Tale IV: Return of the Bard (or Return to Skara Brae, or Legend of the Archmage)

I loved Bard's Tale (all in the series). I had them for my amiga 500 and although todays games, may have better graphics, there was a certain quality in this series that just doesn't exist anymore. Please bring them back or release a new version. I would pay any amount comparable to todays new games.

Bards Tale helped centre my early life. Deep huh?

With it's in-depth storyline, character interaction and atmosphere it simply shouted 'GAMEPLAY IS KING'. It's tremendous mazes, fiendish puzzles and deadly creatures led me on and on, at no time has any other game given me so much enjoyment. Don't get me wrong..I'm no fanatic I TRIED to find that subtle BT fix elsewhere, but no matter how hard developers tried (oh and they tried) nothing hit that sweet rpg-spot.

EA please decide on what route you are going to take, will you finance a new game or will you sell the licence? Whatever you do make it quick, there are thousands of avid credit-card carrying punters drooling at the chance to spend their ill-gotten gains on a new Bards Tale.

I'd pay $100 easy for a A4-sized box layout with maps, journals etc that you USED to do so well.

Bards Tale was a work of art as well as a commercial product, not many realize just how rare that really is. Do you?

Love it like a brother, the Bard's Tale games. BT 1 was my introduction to RP games. My friend who had an Amiga bought it when it came out, and it held us spellbound (much to the detriment of my uni course [I passed it though]) for the best part of a month. I'm now a businessman, am married, house, ski lodge, etc, etc, but I still play Bards Tale from time to time. I would love to see a BT 4, and more even... I also program and would be interested in writing one. If you have a look at the BARD.EXE, (or DK.EXE) file (in something like Xtree for DOS), you will see (apart from finding out lots of things!) that its written in Microsoft C or something. I would be tempted to write it in something similar, to keep the DOS feel about it.

I grew up with RPG's and have a lot of experience with them, My first computer one being Bard's Tale for the Apple IIe. Would be a shame to let it die. Willing to pay? As much as the average game. Depends on what they do with the engine. There's enough out there that they could make an easy come back-Just look at the other games around them.

The Bard's Tale series is one of my all time favorite group of games. It's a shame they stopped at three when Wizardry and Might and Magic have gone on to make so many more sequels. A fourth Bard's Tale would be awesome. $50 would be a small sacrifice to pay. One thing I would like to see would be more NPC interaction. Flesh the stories out a bit more.

I for one woud love to see a Bard's Tale IV released for systems like PC, Playstation, Playstation 2, etc. I brought a copy of the Ultimate RPG Archives in 1999. I first got into Bard's Tale after I played a game written with the Bard's Tale Construction Set. It would also be a good idea to bring the other Bard's Tale games onto systems like Playstation, Playstation 2, etc.

I thought the bards tale series was great and would happily buy a further sequel. Whilst the cost of doing a true release might seem expensive, I think it could take off, and you could try selling it through the internet without any expensive packaging first and yet be able to make a reasonable amount of money.

This is THE game that impressed and influenced me the most during my "teen-age" ... Even it was my first RPG and I had no manual any actually no clue what itīs all about, I managed to solve the "Tales of the unknown". Today, still itīs charming to play it on the PC and it reminds me of these days - but a fourth part is definitely missing !!! I donīt want a real-time "action rpg" - sure, it should be up to date concerning graphics, size and complexity (number of monsters, dungeons, item and more varieties - a bit like Ultima ;-).

Those guys at EA/Interplay know how to handle this and it would be a fatal mistake not to release it !!! So - please - go for it !

Bard's Tale I was the first RPG I ever played. The graphics were great for the time. Heck, just looking at the cover illustration was enough for me. It evoked everything that an RPG should be. I've played many others in the intervening years, but this game holds an unbelievable soft spot for me. Please bring it back.

I played in my younger years Bard's Tale 3, and the 2nd after the 3rd... :) Today all games are based on 3D GRAPHICS... but no one reaches the interressest of Bard's Tales. Games like Morrowind and others are very nice, but too heavy to play... Bard's Tale was and is still for me the BEST RPG GAME EVER PROGRAMMED! (Still better than PoolOfRadiance, and others!). Seeing a 4th BT would be very nice, just hoping it won't mess up to be too heavy looking like the today's games. A remake up of it would be good, still keeping the 2D graphics and same gameplay. Was fun to write all spells down, and design ourself the maps....

I just want BT4, and that's all! I'm willing to pay a full game's price of $50 for it. But it has to reach Hungary... I liked Dragon Wars very much, the skill system was very good - also the number of useless spells was reduced in that game... Even now I'm playing BT2 with a C-64 emulator.

This series of games was my first introduction into RPG and probably the most fun I ever had in front of a computer. It had a great environment that still haunts my dreams (good thing). The storylines and interactive quests were the best. The included bard character to chroncle your events in song is a must. This series had soul, and it is the only RPG that is STILL play over and over with new characters. Update this series, keep the classic elements and give it a great new release in Bard's Tale IV!!! I will buy it when it arrives. And then I shall lock meself away and play it forever!!!

This was my favorite series of games ever!! I played them forever and never got tired! No other game has been made like them since!!! all this arcade style, 3d, real-time rpg crap today outrages me!! This series was deep, I cared about the cool characters and the tons of spells and great storyline! Please bring back my memories of youth and let me play these again before I die! A new one would be great, but only if it was honorable and up to the old ones style and standards,(please don't attempt to make one like todays type of rpg, it would suck), keep it turnbased(same exact combat style) with better graphics and I would buy 2 copies at 60 bucks each! Bard's Tale, the name says it all, a magical quest full of awesome combat and spells I will never forget it as long as I live! It makes the Ultima series look like total crap(yet somehow that crap managed to stay above water, don't ask me how). One thing that stands out in Bt above all other games and has never been matched to this very day(try and challenge this and you will fail), Summoning monsters and being able to bring over almost any monster you fight to your side, a member of the party!, not some temporary friend but a permanent member til it dies!! I loved that! And Sorcerers capable of destructive spells unlike any other game, name a game where 1 spell can wipe out almost 400 Berserkers!! Mind Blade was a sweet spell. Anyone who thinks this game can't cut it and make any money..well they have not played the originals, or they are stupid enough to think they are outdated(most old games do suck, but this was an exception!). Here is an Idea, make a compilation of all the BT games but re-do the graphics so noone has to use that crappy moslo program, it don't work with todays hi end comps anyway, add some sound too and wala instant seller. With todays comp ability a new BT could use same combat engine with much better grahics and sound, MORE spells MORE songs MORE characters and monsters and MUCH longer than any of the previous ones! Ok I will stop drooling now and get back to some boring game called everquest 8(

Hi,

So, I too am a big fan of Bard's Tale. Only been playing it since 91 or so, but it got more playtime than any game other than Dark Castle... ok - more probably.

My thinking is... if Bard's Tale 2 & 3 were failures (in comparison to the original, from what I've heard)... and everyone loves the original... and presumably still like playing the original... rather than shooting for a Bard's Tale 4, see if the original game could be re-released with modern graphics, sounds, etc.

It could be enhanced in various ways without ruining the gameplay, and I dare say would still be popular despite the age of the game itself.

My main reason for this idea is that I have only ever played the game on Macintosh, and the one thing I have always wanted to see was the Mac version in color.

Before finding your site I was wondering if a company like Delta Tao would be able to buy the rights and re-release the game like they did for Dark Castle, but it sounds like EA aren't interested in letting anyone touch it. :(

In the example of Dark Castle, Delta Tau colourised the game, but other than 1 screen the game was the same as always. They are now working on Dark Castle 3, which will incorporate Dark Castle 2 (in color) plus a whole new scenario. It sounds promising, but they don't seem to follow deadlines over there.

What I imagine is "picture"-quality graphics, background sounds, battle sounds, signs of life on the streets (ie rather than simply suddenly being confronted by a group of Orcs, you see them in the distance moving toward/away from you, etc)...

Also, perhaps via "Beginners/Intermediate/Advanced" level options - you could play the original game, or on higher levels, have added dungeons, more levels to existing dungeons, more expensive fees for weapons, healing etc, more powerful and new creatures to fight...

Perhaps it's just my Mac-induced sentimenality... but this option sounds very tempting, compared to that of a "new" Bard's Tale which would likely be very different in game-play and style...

Anyways... rambled enough probably.

I'm here as an avid fan of classic gaming and all sorts of RPG-style games to say that the time has come for a new chapter in the Bard's Tale legacy. I found elements of the greatest RPGs for the first time in the Bard's Tale- creating your own party, character classes, use of magic and magical bard songs- but not only that, all three installments of The Bard's Tale were classics in and of themselves, and I continue to play them to this day, whenever I have some spare time and feel like partaking of a fantastic adventure in mythical lands. I'm sure you've heard this before, but the sentiment is strong in RPG gamers everywhere. We require new adventures, believable role-playing and character interaction, tales of treasure and magic artifacts, as well as new spells to cast and new challenges to overcome. As good as the classics are, something new is needed. We want it like no other game. I've heard talk going around that EA as a company is not particularly attracted by the financial stipulations that producing a new Bard's Tale would involve. Well, in that case, if you're not going to, let Interplay do it. They want to. I have trust in their abilites to produce challenging and entertaining games, which pretty much covers the entire spectrum of gaming. This is an appeal as a gamer, not as a person burdened with monetary convictions. People want to play such a game as this. I strongly believe that if Interplay is interested in producing such a fine game, then let them and stop stalling. All we're asking for is a game that a lot of people will buy and enjoy for hours. It doesn't even have to be totally complex. While The Bard's Tale can be complex in some ways, with all the spells and such to keep track of, but there's a particular hack-and-slash feel to it, in the sense that there's less time to be taken. Where in Dungeons & Dragons, you find yourself calculating damage and waiting patiently for the results, in BT you can run into a dungeon and immediately get into combat where results are instantaneous and the dungeons are huge, and you never know what's lurking around the next corner. The only thing I would add is maybe some visual spell effects, sound fx and anything else to liven up the experience and perhaps "flesh out" the monsters a bit. The bottom line is, in one sentence: gamers want BTIV.

I have been playing video games from Wizardry 1 and Ultima II on, and would love to see the Bard's Tale series revived! I would be willing to pay $50 for the game, and up to $10/month for online service (similar to Everquest and Ultima Online). I think a Bard's Tale MMORPG would actually give Ultima Online a run for its money. I know I would quit playing UO to join BT!

Ahhh... Bard's Tale. Endless hours of my misspent youth on my old Apple playing Bard's Tale I. I would love to see the fourth installment for the PC / Playstation / Xbox. It was truly a ground breaking game, way ahead it time. I dare say that most modern RPG's that you can purchase off the shelf nowadays lend themselves to the original Bard's Tale games.

I guess the cost could be any where from $30 to $50 depending on the quality and depth of the game.

Many years ago my mother received a C128 from a friend as a freebie and she asked if I wanted it. I said sure, anything that I could play around with. A lot of software titles were thrown in with the machine, and one of the games was Bard's Tale III. From the moment I first booted it up, the game had me hooked. Maps to draw, characters to build, items to find, puzzles to solve and monsters to fight. Never has any game come close to the variety that Bard's Tale III provided, even considering the powerful game machines that exist today. I recall spending months playing the same game, something I can't do with video games these days. Alas I was never able to finish it, as the C128 keyboard became dirty and worn; the 'S' key no longer worked, which meant that I could not save my game. The computer and the disks were put in boxes to await cleaning and repairs which I never got around to. Though it was not the first RPG/adventure game that I played (Dungeon Master holds that honor), it is certainly the game I have played the most... EVER. Any Bard's Tale IV would have to have the epic scope of the third installment, as well as hundreds of monsters and items. More detailed information about items and characters would be nice, and better interface between the player and the game would also be vital. Graphics were never the draw of the series, but updating the first-person perspective to increase the suspense and heighten the tension of exploring deep dungeons would be a wonderful addition. Lastly, one of the best parts of Bard's Tale III was the well-written script and the messages in the dungeons which described certain areas. Notes and descriptors for a sequel is a must!

I liked the interesting story plus the intricate puzzle in the Bard's Tale series. But most of all, I really liked the numerous spells and weapons available throughout the game. I hope that such features would be included in the next one, may it be a first-person type and still with a lot of text (just like Thief of Fate, but with DEFINITELY BETTER 3D GRAPHICS), or a Diablo-type game. Thanks much!

I would love to have a Bards Tale IV. In fact, how about updated versions of B/T I - III. I have played these games on an old Commodore, the Amiga, and on an old 486 (Graphics were really bad when compared to the Amiga.). This was my first RPG game, and I have never found another that compared with it.

It was just today that I was discussing with some other roleplayers about the greatest Role-Playing-Game ever, some mentioned the newest part of the DaggerFall Series, others mentioned the german series-Das Schwarze Auge- and me came to mind, the first RPG of my life, when with the age of ten I got my first computer. It was an Commodore-64, that is still functional and working, an posted the Bard's Song from Bard's Tale I, and I found that there where some people at the discussionboard that shared my feelings about THE BARD'S TALE, however, I still own all of my drawn maps of the dungeons, the catacombs of the Mad God, Kylereans Tower, the City of Tangrmayne, and it was just strange luck today that I found your site. When I was just looking through some german RPG pages, when there I found this link"Bard's Tale IV Petition". Now, I'm still fire and flame for Bard's Tale, and even if the PC-Speaker sound is very ***, I still love to play it, even if prefer to play it on my C-64, because the conversion of the sound is not too well, O.K., cause for this may have been the time of it's creation. And what was very annoying, where the bugs in Bard's Tale II, it just too often crashed, and the transport of the characters did not work properly, they lost their skills, or could not get better in them anymore, some items became strange, or the weaponshop crashed if you sold them particular things. For Bard's Tale III, I can not clearly remember, I think till of the problem with the character transport from BT I&II it was everything O.K. ...

I have enjoyed the Bards Tale Trilogy for a long while now, and I would like to see a newer version. I'd like to see the older versions, (exactly as they are) ported to the Playstation, Mac, and other platforms. Maybe better graphics, but definately bring them back out of the dust. Please make a new Bards Tale for all of us to enjoy. I loved the variety of spells, weapons, armor, and the intriguing maps and details of the games. I would definately buy any Bards Tale game available for any platform, (Of course, if the platform is one that I own).

I would love to see a bards tale 4. I loved the first three of it and think it was one of the best rpg's of it's time. It would also be great to have updated versions of the old bards tale that would run on a new computer. I know if they made it, people would buy it. if nothing else, those of us that started off on the old bards tale would be a big enough buyers base to make money of a new one.
